Having an outdoor pre wedding photo session is a dream for thousand bride and groom to be, for all of us this gonna be a big market to serve. The only thing that you should know when having an outdoor photo shoot is discover the lights, when you can see where the light source is and what kind of character that can be made through it than you can create your own masterpiece.
Definitely I love available light so bad, it able to produce very good light quality and we can mix with anything such as reflection, flash, or simply just use it and push your shutter button.
Back to couple years ago when I went to Bali for wedding photo shoot, I got the weather is so hot even I got my skin burned just within 2 hour. So I’ll be in a church for blessing ceremony, it’s an indoor church actually than I going to the beach for family photo shoot, sunset post wedding shoot in other beach, and the last is a dinner time.
Here I’m having a photo shoot for Singaporean couple who visit my website just couple of months before the day. I met the bride, Jasmine, for lunch and meeting in Raffles area and we have very nice cafe out there.
When you see my photo above, I use a 16-35 mm f2.8 L series lens + Hoya UV filter with 1/250 exposure time and I got 2.8 for the aperture. I ask my couple to standing on the coral stone and hug each other than the last is just having fun with them. I surely got a little bit foggy out there but I still can see the orange-blue sunset color on the horizon so I think I got a very tight chance to capturing their moments. Always remember! the golden sunset is coming in very fast you got only 15 – 20 minutes and it’s gone!
If you got a foggy cloud than it’s fine but if you got a super harsh light than I think you also need a circle reflector, it’s quite cheap about US$19-22 but you able to get silver and gold cover too, in this case you can use the silver one for reflect the sun into the couple’s body.
My couple come to Patra Hotel Kuta just for dinner and this hotel is incredible! Here they got many good spots for outdoor photo shoot, so when you got a client who got married in here someday than you can ask them to be in the beach at 16.30 and having fun for 1 hour till the sunset is gone.

Always communicate with your couple for what you going to do with them
So if I can suggest you some tricks for having an outdoor photo shoot, so this how I made:
- Posing your couple with the best background on location
- If you got a balance light on your couple’s face than you can just simply push your shutter but if it looks so dark than use your reflector
- Stay in a big aperture number such as 2.8 or below 4 will give an awesome impression on your photos, and
- Do as natural as you can for this!
Just try to promote your services in Bali Indonesia both for engagement or wedding photo shoot, once you come here than you will so addicted. Its culture, food, and people are awesome and since they live in majority from tourism they will be so kind to all you. Kuta, Nusadua, and Uluwatu are primes area where the good hotel and resort is located. Once you have a business purposes to go there than I can suggest you with some affordable accommodation surrounding by such as:
- Pop Hotel in Teuku Umar Rd – A lot of food and convenient store in this street, they available on Agoda too, just compare the rates
- Favehotel Kuta Square – It’s prime district so you can get what you want here, from the best street food till night club where you can chill out following your photo shoot and yes they also available on Agoda too
Both hotels above is my personal recommendation when I’ll be in Bali for couple of days, they get affordable price and located in prime area where food, cafes, and bars are nearby, it’s the only thing that I need to refresh my mind.
