For Centuries, Begawan Giri was known as “Wise Man’s Mountain”, a 20-acre parcel of serenity hidden amid the emerald hills, rivers, forests, and rice fields of central Bali. Just outside the cultural center of Ubud, the estate with 12 villas dan residences fuses Asian and European design influences to dramatic effect. Architect Cheong Yew Kuan created each residence to evoke a unique aspect of Indonesian culture “from a luxury tyre house to a maharajah’s palace” and filled each with exquisite artifacts, furnishings, and art. (A 24-hour personal butler assigned to each residence fulfills every request.) A steep stone staircase leads to landscaped water gardens fed by mountain springs; next to the Ayung River lies the Source spa, which draws its inspiration from the nearby springs as well as from Bali’s healing rituals. Treatments can be performed in outdoor pavilions in the privacy of the guest’s own villa. Choices include the two-hour Mandi Lulur (“royal wedding treatment”), in which a Balinese-style massage in combined with a body mask of rice flour, turmeric, and jasmine, followed by a soak in a flower bath. In keeping with the fundamental spirituality of the region, yoga and energy work are also on hand, along with sessions from visiting masters trained in various forms of healing.
