If this gonna be your first time to go to Hallstatt than it just a small town but standing in a magnificent view surrounding and located between Salzburg and Graz. For over than the decades, this extraordinary place belong to the UNESCO’s heritage site and truly important for Austrian tourist attraction. There are not so many people know about why Hallstatt become so famous but today I wanna tell you that this extraordinary village is known by million people in this world not because of its majestic view but because it belongs to the oldest salt mine in the world.
If we talk in hundred years ago era than having a salt is like owning a gold mountain that not so many cities in Europe able to provide it. And having a salt in the small village behind the gigantic mountain is extremely one luxury thing everyone really need for sure. Nowadays we know Hallstatt is a peaceful place for honeymoon, family holiday or even celebrating a big day called weddings and when you touch down in this village than you gonna see beautiful authentic houses with its own reflection on the water lake and nice smile from the local people with various of tasty pastry and cuisine surrounding by.
International Flights to Go to Hallstatt
There is no international airport in Hallstatt so you gonna take a train, car or combining with a local bus to go to Hallstatt. Generally there are 5 (five) international airport alternatives that you can consider while choosing the right airlines and schedule such as:
- Salzburg (SZG) – 55 km
- Graz (GRZ) – 149,3 km
- Ljunljana (LJU) – 160, 2 km
- Munich (MUC) – 164,3 km and
- Vienna (VIE) – 226,1 km

Now let me explain in more detail about how to go to Hallstatt from those several airports.
How to Go to Hallstatt Recommendations
- Salzburg to Hallstatt – If you choosing to stop at Salzburg than continue to Hallstatt than ride with train will be the easiest way to do. You can take an Austrian National OBB train to Attnang-Puchheim than take a transfer to the local REX train to Hallstatt with around 50 minutes. Another options that you can consider is by using a connecting bus, ferry, or even renting a car. If you choose to ride with the bus than your journey will take around 2 hours and 15 minutes, train + short ferry ride will be 2,5 hours, and when you rent a car to Hallstatt than you will arrive in just 1,5 hours.
- Graz to Hallstatt – If you choose to be in Graz and I recommend you to go to Hallstatt by train by riding from Graz Hbf to Stainach-Irdning than continue with another train from Stainach-Irdning to Hallstatt, for the total you will spend around 3 hours and 40 minutes of joyful train ride. Don’t too worry because for almost 4 hours than you gonna see beautiful view surrounding and it should be super exciting moment if you just travel to Hallstatt for the first time.
- Ljunljana to Hallstatt – If you begin your journey from Ljunljana than I recommend you to ride with the bus from Ljubljana to Salzburg South and continue with another bus from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Bad Ischl Bahnhof, for the whole journey you will spend around 7,5 hours
- Munich to Hallstatt – If your flight landed in Munich and you gonna sightseeing around Europe than I still recommend you to rent a car like what my friend did with his BMW 3 series rental car but if you wanna travel by public transport than train is the only one that I recommend you to choose. - Vienna to Hallstatt – There are 15 train connections will be available for every single day so definitely you don’t need to be worry with various schedule. The easiest and fastest way to travel is depart from Wien Hauptbahnhof (or Bahnhof Wien Meidling) on RailJet, than continue with Westbahn or intercity trains system than get short transfer at Attnang-Puchheim with the local train. Since this option is available hourly than you can take a joyful day for sure, for the whole journey you will spend around 3,5 hours
How to Getting Married in Austria Legally
Off course you wanna getting married in Austria legally cause this is what you dreaming for back several years. First thing that you need to do is fill all the marriage application in the registrar’s office in Vienna but if one of you are Austrian than application can be done outside of Vienna. On this process I highly suggest you to have your own Austrian wedding planner cause it seems to be difficult to arrange especially if you don’t speak German at all.
You also have to know that all application should be done 6 months before your big day and there will be up to 6 weeks to wait for the approval than you have to pay the fee for it. Austria it self has various of wedding traditions that do for bringing a good luck following the big day to both of you. Let me tell you that due to Austrian traditions than Wednesday will be the best day for wedding and don’t make your own wedding dress cause it symbolise a bad luck for your marriage.
If you considering to getting married in Austria than I wanna share few things that you need to be prepared before having a marriage celebration in Hallstatt or any other cities in Austria.
- You must be over than 18 years old
- Having your own Passport and birth certificate (original or certified copy).
- Completed residence registration form and proof of residence but if you stay in a hotel all around Austria than you it wouldn’t be required.
- A completed certificate of Freedom to Marry
- If you have been married before than you must show the proof of dissolution of precious marriage and your previous Marriage Certificate
- Please remind that all documents must be translated into German by an official translator.
