The Roppongi Hills Spa is set within the new Roppongi complex in Tokyo, Japan, which includes a new Grand Hyatt with 389 rooms and suites, cinema multiplex, art center, business tower, luxury residences, and upscale shops and restaurants. Members of the Roppongi Club enjoy a retreat from the bustle of Tokyo in this sophisticated 1800 square-meter spa designed by Britain’s Conran & Partners. Conceived as a journey away from the tension, stress, and fatigue of city living, the spa visitor passes through a series of layers and thresholds, creating in him or her a calm, serene, and enhanced state. To accentuate the notion of the visitor’s journey throughout the spa, the design team developed two distinct areas: a “preparatory” side – a cleansing and restrained environment aimed at calming – and a “restorative” side – a more vibrant atmosphere promoting renewed stimulation. The lockers, showers and changing areas on the preparatory side of the plan assist patrons in unwinding, in readiness for the restoration process ahead. The “restorative” side of the spa is meant to enhance purification, stimulation, meditation, and rejuvenation, incorporating whirlpool baths, plunge pools, a swimming pool, and treatment rooms. Vibrantly colored spaces, such as the treatment rooms, provide an atmospheric and stimulating backdrop for the activities within.
