Therme Vals appears to be the antithesis of Alpine architectural cliches, yet the monumental edifice belongs thoroughly to the local landscape. Architect Peter Zumthor custom-fitted layer upon layer of locally quarried quartzite slabs (60,000 in all) to create a museum-like venue for the mineral-rich waters that spring from underground. Bathers enter through a subterranean tunnel as though delving into the heart of the mountain. From there, changing rooms let onto a balcony overlooking the main-floor baths – six pools that scale the temperature range from arctic to equatorial. The ice pool hits the mercury at a bone-chilling 57⁰F, the fire pool at a stress-melting 107⁰F. Among the options that fall in between is the flower pool, a floral soup packed with fragrant petals and constantly maintained at a comfortable 91⁰F. Beneath the watery, rock-faced milieu of the baths, rooms painted in metallic silver are the setting for a menu of cures that includes beauty treatments, aromatherapy, thalassotherapy, and massage. Particularly appropriate to the quartzite environs is the spa’s signature treatment – a stone massage. For nearly two hours, a therapist slides heated pebbles dipped in aromatic oil over the body, ironing out tension with every stroke. The proprietors promise that Therme Vals’ original 140-room hotel will soon be “on a par with the distinction of the Therme Vals.”
