If you think visiting Yogyakarta for honeymoon or holiday at the first time ever than I hope I could deliver great information today. Hi lovely couple my name is Bima and I’m living in this town for over than 30 years. Since 2004 I was freaking out about wedding photography till I know how to use my first digital camera of Canon 400D back in 2006, nowadays I serving international coverage of wedding, engagement, and portrait in such wonderful location like Bali, Maldives, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
It’s done to introduce my self so lets get back into the topic,
I live in Yogyakarta since kinder garten class so generally I know exactly about sightseeing around this city and how to explore it as well and find the best thing of this city in a short days.
Visiting Yogyakarta is really simple cause you can get a direct flight from several big cities like Denpasar and Jakarta and yes! you also can get international direct flight too from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Definitely I could say that there are a lot of flight options that you can consider to visit my town, hell yeah!
I know that some of you will need a visa on arrival so I suggest you to visit Indonesian embassy information to check everything you need about immigration. Down here you can get a search form for international and domestic flight to go to Yogyakarta, just use it to find the best and reliable ticket price to go to my town.
Since I run an airbnb business as a side job of photographer so I know as well that generally couple who visiting Yogyakarta for honeymoon only spend for 3 to 4 days at maximum. Most of them are curious about Prambanan Temple, Borobudur, Temple, Sultan Palace, Tamansari Watercastle and surely the Pasar Ngasem, the place that I want to tell you about in this story.
Traditional Market of Pasar Ngasem, the Gate of Tamansari Water Castle
This place was amazing!
If you visiting Yogyakarta and want to see the real life of local people than I suggest you to go into the traditional market. I know there are so many market here in my town but if you just come in a short days than I highly suggest you to go to Pasar Ngasem because at the same time you can see the local people life and continue your journey to Tamansari Water Castle.
Just few years ago, this place was famous to become a bird and animal market but now the government is relocating the animal market into other place called PASTY, you can browse about it. So, when you step into this market now than you could see beautiful and amazing place that belongs to local. Some part are using for traditional market which selling vegetables, fruits, and meat, other part are using for traditional snacks where you can also get a local breakfast for as cheap as US$1,5, what’s better than that!
No matter where you stay than you can ask your hotel’s receptionist or tour guide to go to Pasar Ngasem which is generally about 1km from the Sultan Palace of 100 meter from Tamansari Water Castle. There are a small green round entrance gate with a letter of “Pasar Ngasem” which is become the sign that you are in the right place,
Traditional market will always free to come and you gonna see nice people smiling to you and and old lady who offering you to buy some fruits or snacks politely, generally I love for being here so much. When I don’t have any photo shoot schedule than I will always asking my wife, Nina and kids to go to this market and get a simple breakfast for us. Today I’m not so lucky cause I arrive there at 8.30 am and all the rice, meat, and vegie are sold out so I just can order a rice porridge with eggs and sweet-salty sauce for my breakfast.
For sure I will suggest you to to buy some tropical fruits like banana, papaya, guava or mangos because they taste were so sweet, really cheap, and you can bring them back to your hotel or eat it on the street. Just for your first impression than I’m gonna let you see how beautiful this market is,
All things are look so fresh and cool here in this market, people are so nice and their face are welcoming you to come over and over again. But if you already get a breakfast at your hotel and don’t wanna get some more so I simply suggest you to but this local and traditional snacks called “Apem”. This snacks was legendary made from hundred years ago and belong to the King’s gift to the citizen of Yogyakarta. So when there is a celebration or parade than our King, the Sultan Hamengkubowono will made thousands of Apem as gift to his citizen.
Now look at this sweet and chewy snack that you must eat here in Yogyakarta, this is Apem!
It made from rice powder and flour than add an eggs, sugar, and coconut milk. When I see this snack I always remember my grand mother who always made it during religious celebration in my house, so it’s really typical local snack for everyone and I highly suggest you to buy and eat it during warm.
One of the most recommended Apem seller is “Apem Bu Wanti”, so Ms. Wanti become so famous because she sell hundred of Apem every day and due to my personal experience and try several vendors inside the market than Ms. Wanti’s Apem is still the BEST! It is sweet and chewy and when you eat while still warm than it feels like the coconut melting in your mouth warmly.
So what you waiting for, go get your car, pedicap or becak than go to Pasar Ngasem immediately.
