Today I’m gonna talking about simple wedding photography poses and if you just visit my blog at the first time and I would like to say thank you in advance and hoping I could deliver good information for you. No matter you guys are beginner or professional but here I wanna share for what I know about posing my couple and creating extraordinary pictures that remind my couple about how gorgeous their moments are.
I shoot wedding professionally since 2009 even I work for freelance job since 2004 and one great momentum that I had in this business is I try my best to move from local into global market. Back in 2009 when I start my photographer career than I sell my 6 hours pre wedding collection for US$150 and surely I’m happy with that because finally someone put their trust on me and I could deliver my first works during that day.
If a chef will happy if someone eat his meal clearly than as a photographer you must be happy too when someone put some tears on the cheek, smiling while seeing your works or even say a nice words to you for appreciation, and that’s what I had during my first session.
Before I share about simple wedding photography poses that you easily can do, down here I’m gonna share some links where you could consider for my useful articles related to photography industry.

10 Simple Wedding Photography Poses That You Can Easily Do
All right, now I will share everything that I know to make a poses or directing the couple to get the most prestigious moment for the next decades. If you already working in this industry for several years than you must realize that posing a couple is one of the most exciting moment, if you could know about it as well than you will run your session happily but in case you black out during the session because you don’t know what to do to your couple than everything will so bad.
I try to called all these 10 simple wedding photography poses with my own code-name but I hope you can get it on your mind, now let’s we begin!
1 – Dancing with Camera
This is the first pose that I always do when just starting my session, at the first 15 minutes will quite challenging so I don’t wanna make a ridiculous poses that made my couple’s mood going bad but I want to make as simple poses that they can do.
Dancing with Camera code-name is just a calling for what I do as simple as capturing all natural moments which is in the same time I checking all the light, mood, exposure and everything without any hard feeling if I see it in a bad result. Generally I just shoot and shoot without worry about the result and this is some example that I could share with.
This picture below is taken from Adi and Ika pre wedding session, sky was soooo cloudy even we got hard rain too and the worse situation on this scene is, I got my groom in a bad flu disease so I surely think that he got a hard headache during the session. What I did is asking my couple to stand on the river-front grass and ask them to get some classic pre wedding poses and finally got this images.
2 – Veil and Wind
Veil is one ‘must have’ thing if you do have the session both in wedding or engagement, the good news is some of bridal designer used to put veil into one collection so once you bought the bridal than you will have the veil too. When I shoot for Jasmine and Arthur wedding in Conrad Bali, I saw my bride have an amazing veil so it seems like I will get beautiful things in some post portrait session following the blessing ceremony.
Take a look for these lovely photos below,
She has a long veil on her own, seems like almost 3 meters long, if you ever go to Conrad Bali and see the beautiful triangle infinity chapel than you will see few areas surrounding where you can take a post wedding shots, so I ask Jasmine and Arthur to go to those places and we got a joy session for an hour before the dinner.
3 – Hold Hand and Face to Photographer
Actually this is one of classic wedding pose that I also love to do, it is simple, easy to do, and everybody love it so much. All you need to do in this step is simply asking your couple to hold their hands together while other hands are holding other’s hip and last asking them to look at you.
Look at this picture below,
When capturing Denise and Joel Engagement in Maldives back few years ago I ask them to take a photo shoot on the Dhoni, it’s a Maldivian traditional boat that connect two island of our resort, what I did is I go up into the board wooden roof while my couple is still on the lower level.
4 – Make a Mirror Reflection
I don’t know you can find this thing during your session or not but if you guys taking a photo shoot at indoor location like hotel, lobby, or cafes than finding mirror is really easy. What I did in Intan Alfa Pre Wedding session is taking my couple into corridor than get them to stand right in front of the mirror and this the result,
Now look at my photo in detail, there you will see a green oval frame and that is the mirror frame, so I ask my couple to stand at the opposite of that mirror and shoot them indirectly, it means I’m not shoot at my couple but I shoot their reflection on the mirror.
Now look at for an artificial lighting that I use on this frame, see on the left side, there is a yellow LED lighting that I use as a fill in because the corridor is so dark. My suggestion is hold your lighting for upper level so you can have a great hair light and it goes down to the bride hands too.
5 – Enjoying the Bad Weather and Shoot Under the Rain
Weather is one of the best problem for photographer and all peopel who work in this industry, especially for us who working by capturing moment and dealing with weather that we can not control. But do you think this is an excuse on the session?
No, it’s absolutely not an excuse as long as you can see this part in a positive way!
Few years ago I was going to Magelang, a peaceful city like 45 km from my house for pre wedding shooting. I was remember that since I drove my car out of the garage and I saw the sky was so cloudy which is mean it could just rainy or the worse belong to thunder storm.
My photo above is one of my works that try to dealing with unpredictable weather, the sunset ambiance is over because the sky was so cloudy and thunder storm was coming till we have to stop the photo session for little while. What you have to do for that style is simply asking your couple to stand under the rain by using an umbrella (surely you will need it). Once everything is settle and asking them to hold your flash light and let the light goes up and reflect to the umbrella and it the same time you could use wireless trigger to fire up the flash and get the scene in.
6 – Wave the Dress
Wave the dress, it is super excited pose that you can made no matter where you are but definitely you need other people help or in my case than I got help from my second shooter and one another person from the wedding planner. Kindly take a look for this photo below,
When shooting for Marcia and Kaisar’s wedding in Jakarta back few years ago I have plenty of time to shoot this gorgeous bride in front of the ballroom. What I did in this scene is put my knees down into the floor and asking my second shooter and wedding planner to hold Marcia’s bridal fabric on each side than in the same time both of them was making some waves up and down while I keep pushing the camera shutter till I got one great pose and scene like this.
7 – Hold the Hip and Jump!
I love this pose so much, it looks so natural and make my couple happy at the same time. If you gonna do this pose than you can asking your couple to stand together and ask them to face each other with a little body distance. Now you can ask your groom to hold his bride’s hip and make a count for one..two..three or give another sign than he must be able to pull his bride body as high as he can and hold it for a second on the air, just to give the best time for you as a photographer to shoot.
Now let see two of my photos below,
There are two couple at the different location (one in Yogyakarta and another one in Maldives) but I still do the same pose for them, at the end this pose still make an outstanding pictures that I could deliver to my couple for sure.
8 – Hug Together and Close Your Eyes
This 8th pose is really simple and you could afford it to as many couple that you have and I sure that most of couple will be able to do it as easy as make a coffee at home.
Look at the picture above, it was so ordinary and common photo that you guys surely can do. When taking for Jasmine and Kevan’s wedding in Patra Bali, I ask them to go up into the rock coral hill where surely we will get a beautiful sunset ambiance and once everything is done than I ask them to hug each other with a closed eyes. Surely you can ask them to open their eyes but when you got them close it than it feels like different and you gonna bring that moment into the next level.
9 – Stand Alone with Outstanding Landscape
When you do some photoshoot in one great landscape like beach, mountain, lake, hill etc than you surely got another benefit of view so use it to creating a cool pose with that landscape. Somebody said that once you got great landscape than you gonna have a great photo….hmmm it could be yes and no actually because even you got a great landscape but the one thing that really matter is your photography expertise.
I have a beautiful bride today who’s coming from Australia and spend few days in Bali for their destination wedding celebration, it’s called Josh and Renee. Look at the pictures, you can asking your bride to stand alone, holding a flower bouquet if she has it and give a little smile during the scene and, Click!
I always agree that if a woman wear white bridal than seems to be she has a inner beauty that really easy to come out and this is what Renee got during her wedding in Bali.
10 – Lay on the Floor
This is the last pose that I will share today and it’s called Lay on the Floor. Just like the others, it also really simple to do and you can do it anywhere as long as it’s not that dirty to lay on. Joanna and Angga, this is the name of my gorgeous couple on the photo below.
One day Joanna just came across my blog and asking me to have an afternoon tea where we can know each other and simply drinks a great camomile tea to get our first meeting feels good. Lately I got a deal with this beautiful bride who asking me to go to Ancol beach in Jakarta where there is a wooden deck with few cafes surrounding and yes we got a “Lay on the Floor” pose during that session.
What I did is asking both Joanna and Angga to lay on the floor and I use my wide lens of Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 Nano lens and capture this moment, it was really fast and so simple so that I could share here in my blog and deliver the information to all of you.
