Talking about dynamic couple poses during pre wedding or wedding means we gonna do the opposite of classic couple poses, if you just come to my blog at the first time than I suggest you to go to that link to figure out how it’s gonna be. The good news is both dynamic and classic couple poses is ain’t that difficult as long as you keep practicing and find your own style, so generally it will easy to do even you just begin your photographer career.
Dear photographer friend, my name is Bima and today I wanna share to you about how to make dynamic couple poses during the photoshoot and made it as one of the best poses in your session. By the way I’m a photo journalist maniac so no matter where I shoot I wondering to get many poses that look so natural, for me, it’s gonna be awesome if my couple could see how beautiful their day is during the celebration, dinner, or simply an engagement shots.
I could telling you that all my style is influence by my mentor Joe Buissink and he extremely change my mindset about how to shoot in wedding. Since at the first time I saw his action from the old DVD of master wedding photographer till in 2012 I became of his assistant in wedding ceremony that located in Bali than finally I know how to shoot in wedding with more fun.
Posing is one of the most taught part in wedding photography cause by simply ask our bride to put her hand on the groom’s shoulder will looks so different if we comparing ask her to put her hand on groom’s chest. All poses are great but not every poses will take your photography into the next level step, so even it looks so simple but it’s quite tricky for newly wedding photographer for sure.
The Definition of Dynamic Couple Poses
In more specific sentence than I will describe dynamic couple poses as a posing that needs a movement, so here you can ask your couple to walk, running, jump, or making another movement effect like having the wind or making a simple gown waves but over all we made some unique mood in this dynamic poses.
When shooting for Jasmine and Arthur’s wedding in Bali Indonesia, I ask them to hold their hand together and run towards me, it’s not real moment but I ask them to make this moment looks so natural and what I concern with is, I able to captured their beautiful and happiness during that day. In fact I pose my couple to do this for up to 3 times, so I ask them to run from one point to another point till I get the best pictures of them. In other words I directing Jasmine and Arthur but I must get the most natural moment from this ‘fake’ poses.
I do this poses so many times both in pre wedding or in wedding day and by combining between dynamic and classic couple poses than finally I got several images that belong to something that I called as a ‘Stopping Pictures’ or in other words than it seems to be my ‘Wow Factor’ that gonna impressed my couple.
4 Tips to Make Dynamic Couple Poses in Engagement and Wedding Session
To make this article worth it to read and try so lets jump into the real photo and let me guide you to learn more about this dynamic couple poses technique.
1 – Ask the Groom to Hold His Bride and, Jump!
Jumping on the photoshoot is one thing that I always do during my session (if I think they are able to made it), let me show you with these two images below…
Picture on left is taking in Gumuk Pasir, one most famous location in Yogyakarta that used for pre wedding. On that day I hosted a pre wedding for humble couple named Marcia and Kaisar. So these gonna be some steps how I encourage my couple to do this pose:
- I asked the groom to hold his hand together on the bride’s hip
- Count 1, 2, and 3 than ask the bride to Jump than let her hands sway just like flying.
- I ask the groom to hold for several seconds while I push my camera button in fast
Now is about pictures on the right, this is one great moment that I got during Denise and Joel engagement session that I took in Maldives. If you see on the right picture than you will see that Denise’s dress tail is so long, probably around 4 meters so even she jump than the tail is still on the ground. So these are some steps that I did during that moment:
- Bridal gown materials is so slippery on the hand so what I did is asking the groom to hold his hand on bride’s thigh, it worth it to do seriously!
- I ask the bride to jump than buckling his leg to make an impression that she jump so high, if I don’t do this than the tail of the 4 meter dress will still on the ground and make an impression that she’s not jumping
- i ask the bride to hold her groom’s shoulder to stabilize the pose while I push my camera shutter as fast as I can
2 – Let the Wind Blows, and Shoot Fast!
If you shoot in an outdoor area like mountain and beach than let the wind become of you best ‘partner’, it can be so disturbing but will come with a lot of potentials things, so let see the picture below,
Look at the emotion on this picture above,
In this session I asked Jasmine to put her veil under the head and let them look at each other, priceless! By the way I still remember that the wind blows so hard so if she not holding her veil than it gonna be gone for sure. So using the wind to make a dynamic couple poses like this is also fine and I sure that you can get the wind anywhere.
3 – Ask People to Make a Movement on the Bridal
I shoot Marcia right in front of OnFIVE ballroom of Grand Hyatt, it such a nice place to shoot with lovely tropical coconut trees and high rise buildings. So what I did during this pose are:
- Asking two people which is my second shooter and a wedding planner two hold and sway Marcia’s bridal till it move like a wave
- I use a wide range lens and shoot through lower angle and keep the focus on Marcia’s face
So it is really simple because you can do it too on your wedding session, once you want to see the whole pictures than you can visit Marcia and Kaisar wedding procession gallery.
4 – Let Them Dance!
Thanks for Spotify because now we can play the music no matter where we go so in general, you could turn the music on and let your couple dance. You don’t need take a long time for this pose because 5 minutes is quite enough. In fact you could do this pose without any music but when you got it for your own than your couple will be able to feel the moment better.
I shoot this pose just close to the cliff of Ayana Resort in Nusadua so it such wonderful venue to encourage my couple to dance while I capturing their moment under the great sunset ambiance.
Now it’s your turn to improve all these 4 tips during your session and make your own dynamic couple poses, go find your style and keep trying no matter what happen, it could be ugly but it could be great too so by trying again and again than you gonna find the best one for your final result.
